What is therapy like?Therapy with me is an opportunity for you to explore your life and yourself in a setting that is comfortable, non-judgmental, supportive and completely confidential. It is different than a good friendship in that the focus of the client-therapist relationship is always on the client. In this way, it is a unique experience that offers tremendous potential for your own growth and development. It is not a mystical experience; it is rational and logical and is based on clear thinking and discussion. Sometimes I will ask you questions that are thought-provoking and unique to the therapy environment; other times I may just sit with you in your emotion and facilitate the expression of your life story and experience. Change is most often the goal of therapy. I don't change or "fix" my clients; I help them find the resources to do that themselves. This is a wonderful part of the whole counselling process as it fosters your own personal and spiritual growth. It means that you will not need to be dependent on me, as your therapist, to support you as you continue on your life journey after therapy is over. I am a Christian...While I am able to work with a diverse set of populations, I do personally operate out of a Christian worldview. I always do my best to honour my client's values, but since therapy is inevitably a value-laden process there may be some times where my values are so different from yours that it may be more beneficial for you to see a therapist with values closer to your own. This is something I am happy to discuss with you at the start of therapy so that you can decide if I am a good match for you as a therapist. Related Articles |
